Legal Services

KFCMN provides legal supports to relative caregivers in four ways:

  • Our hotline (612-424-6958), for urgent matters, is staffed by an attorney Monday-Thursday 10am to 3pm

  • Virtual consultations with one of our attorneys may be scheduled using the calendar link

  • Our attorneys regularly provide consultations at legal clinics hosted by community agencies around the state

  • Some cases are accepted for direct representation, depending on complexity, KFCMN capacity and other considerations.

Relative caregivers are encouraged to contact us for legal supports on issues such as:

  • Delegation of parental authority (DOPA) and third-party custody

  • Immigration issues related to or impacting child welfare intervention

  • Challenges with the foster care licensing process

  • Appeals of licensing actions or denials and placement decisions

  • Child protection primary case intervention

  • Adoption procedure

  • Public benefits or supports associated with foster care, relative placements or adoption

  • Voluntary placement and consent to adopt agreements
